ROAMY Trip: Crafting a Cross-Platform Social Travel Experience

Overview

ROAMY Trip is a social reviews and travel planning platform envisioned as "the 'Beli' for hotels", designed to run on both iOS and Android. It aims to revolutionize how users discover, plan, and share their travel experiences, mirroring native iOS paradigms for a high-quality user experience.

Key Features

  • Comparison-Based Ranking: A unique system for ranking hotels worldwide.
  • Travel Log: Users can collect a "book" of their past hotel stays and record their experiences.
  • Social Connectivity: See where friends are staying and share your own adventures.
  • Trip Planning: Create detailed itineraries, including hotels and daily remarks.
  • Enhanced User Interaction: Comprehensive comments feature with replies, nested replies with expand/collapse, @mention parsing, upvotes, long-press context menu (copy, delete, report), and smooth deletion animations.

Technologies Used

  • Frontend (Mobile): React Native with Expo, TypeScript, Axios.
  • Backend (Server): Node.js with Express.js.
  • Database: PostgreSQL with Prisma ORM.
  • Authentication: JWT (JSON Web Tokens).

Challenges and Learnings

  • Performance Optimization: Implemented AsyncStorage-backed "like" cache, lazy-write workflow for "Saved Trips", FlatList render tuning, and image compression/lazy-loading for instant feedback and smoother performance.
  • Robustness and Maintainability: Resolved critical bugs (e.g., "like" functionality), improved error handling, implemented stricter authentication checks, refactored API calls, and restructured user profile data handling.
  • Overcoming Hurdles: Navigated the React Native learning curve, addressed ranking algorithm complexity, carefully selected APIs for hotel data, and managed ORM/database inconsistencies.
